Sharpening & Repair

Knife Sharpening:    Drop off by appointment only.  Call 406-727-9102 to schedule dropping off your knives for sharpening. Same Day return is $20 fee, overnight service: no additional fees.  If requested, and for an additional fee, I can pickup and return knives within the local Great Falls. MT. area.

Cost for knife sharpening is a flat $10  PER Sharpened edge.  (prices subject to change without notice).   Serrations and blades longer than 10" will be quoted upon examining the blade(s).  Scissors are on a case by case basis.  I can also sharpen MOST yard/garden tools, with cost being quoted upon examination of the item/tool.  Typical push mower blades are $25 each.

**Things I DO NOT sharpen**:  -Carbide or carbide tipped blades
                                                                                   -Circular saw blades
                                                                                   -Planer Blades

All of those items require special tooling/jigs and/or grinders, which I do not own.  Just a bit of free information:  Without exception, every company that produces wood planers utilize different configurations and grind geometries on their planer blades.  Typically, IF you can find someone willing to sharpen planer blades, it will likely be significantly less expensive to purchase new blades.
Knife Repair:  When it comes to knife repair, the most asked question is... "Is this knife worth fixing?"  That opens a whole can of worms!   Only the owner/individual can say whether a knife is worth repairing or not.

I can do most types of repair, on most types of knives.   The issue generally is that potential clients simply don't understand the amount of work and time that repairing a knife takes.

For example... I often field phone calls asking me if I can repair a "broken tip" on a knife blade.  Yes I can, however, depending on how much of the tip is broken off, in order to do the repair "right".... it's likely that after reshaping the broken tip, it becomes necessary to regrind the primary edge bevels, then refinish the entire blade, and then resharpen it.   That's typically more than a full day of work  (counting it at 8hrs) on even a 3" hunting blade.

All Repair work is charged at the rate of $80 per hour plus materials, with a 1 hour minimum.   I must see the knife in person before I can offer any kind of quote/amount of time the repair will take.   There are a number of instances where I will not consent to repair a knife.  Just a couple of scenarios include:

-If the knife is a "custom", and the maker is still alive and working, I WILL NOT repair the knife.  That knife needs to be taken to whomever created it.   I have had far too many instances of  people coming to me with shoddy made "custom" knives, asking me to "fix it".  If you purchased a crappy knife from a hob-knob maker,  Nothing I can do will make that knife any better.   If any maker is not willing to back their product with a lifetime warranty, then you probably should not buy a knife from them.

-If the knife is truly a "collectable" knife, I will not work on it.  ANYTHING I would do to such a knife/blade would only decrease it's value.   Even using a scotchbrite pad to clean up the rust on a blade/knife that is/may be a collectable, will only lessen or destroy the value.  It's fairly rare that a true colloctable knife comes through my shop door.... although everyone thinks the "Knife my Dad got in XXXXX "(fill in the blank)  is a collectable and worth "a lot of money", when in reality it is typically a cheap Knock Off.

The simple fact is that most modern factory knives are not worth "fixing".  That being said, if you honestly want a knife repaired, I can do that for you.   In every case, I would need to see the knife in person before giving you any time or cost estimates.  Please feel free to contact me by either phone or email to setup a time to stop by the shop.   If you live outside my local area, you can mail me the knife, along with return postage, and I will examine the knife, and call you to discuss it's repair.
